Hyderabad: Sunrisers Hyderabad put up a strong show with both bat and ball on Wednesday night. They beat Punjab Kings by 33 runs in Match 49 of IPL 2026. The win pushed SRH to the top of the points table. This was their seventh win in eleven matches. Punjab Kings lost their third game in a row.
The match was played at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. SRH batted first and scored 235 for 4. Punjab Kings tried hard but finished at 202 for 7. Cooper Connolly fought alone for Punjab with a brilliant century. But the target was too big after a poor start.
SRH Batting: Power-Packed Show
SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head started with a bang. They attacked from the very first over. The team reached 79 for 1 in the first six overs. This was the powerplay. It gave SRH a perfect launchpad.
Abhishek smashed 35 runs off just 13 balls. He hit 2 fours and 4 sixes. Travis Head scored 38 runs off 19 balls. He hit 3 fours and 3 sixes. The first wicket fell at 54 runs. Abhishek was caught by Shreyas Iyer off Lockie Ferguson’s bowling. Head got out soon after. Yuzvendra Chahal got him caught at long-off. The score was 84 for 2.
Klaasen and Kishan Cash In
After the openers went back, two big stars took over. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan came together at the crease. Punjab gave them more than one life. Fielders dropped three easy catches. A stumping chance was also missed. Kishan was dropped when he was on 9 and then again on 18. Klaasen was dropped when he was on 9. These misses hurt Punjab very badly.
Kishan and Klaasen made Punjab pay for their mistakes. They added 88 runs for the third wicket. This partnership came off only 48 balls. Kishan scored 55 runs off 32 balls with 2 fours and 4 sixes. Klaasen was even more dangerous. He made 69 runs off 43 balls with 3 fours and 4 sixes. Klaasen once again proved why he is one of the most feared batters in the IPL.
Nitish Kumar Reddy provided a nice finish. He scored 29 runs not out off just 13 balls. He hit 2 fours and 2 sixes. SRH ended their 20 overs at 235 for 4. They hit 17 sixes in total.

Connolly’s Lone Fight for Punjab
Only one batter stood tall for Punjab Kings. Australian player Cooper Connolly played an amazing knock. He was dropped twice during his innings. He made full use of those chances. Connolly smashed his first ever T20 century. He hit 107 runs not out off 59 balls. His innings had 7 fours and 8 sixes.
But he did not get enough support from the other end. Suryansh Shedge scored 25 runs. Marco Jansen added 19 runs. No other batter could even score 30. The next highest score after Connolly was just 28. Punjab never looked like chasing the target. They finished at 202 for 7, losing by 33 runs.

This result breaks a trend in IPL 2026. Teams batting first had not been winning many games this season. But SRH showed that a big total and disciplined bowling can defend any score. Hyderabad will next play on May 12. Punjab Kings will look to bounce back sooner.
