The West Bengal government started the Swasthya Sathi scheme so that people do not have to run here and there for money during treatment. Today, more than 2.45 crore families in the state are connected to this scheme. That means about 8.51 crore people are getting its benefit.

In 2026, a big change has come in West Bengal. After the formation of the new government, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced that the central government’s Ayushman Bharat scheme will also be implemented in the state. But he has made it clear — no existing welfare scheme of the state will be stopped. Swasthya Sathi will continue as before.
That means, now people of West Bengal will have the option of both schemes. Those who are not eligible for Ayushman Bharat will continue to get benefits under Swasthya Sathi. Both schemes will run simultaneously at present.
Many private hospitals had stopped accepting Swasthya Sathi cards after the government change, citing concerns regarding reimbursement of previous dues. But after the new government’s assurance, hospitals have started accepting patients again.
How to Apply for a New Swasthya Sathi Card 2026
If you still have not applied for a Swasthya Sathi card, here is how you can do it.

Go to a Duare Sarkar camp near your area. These camps are organized from time to time.

Answer: No. Balance check is completely free. You do not have to pay any charge for it.
