This happened because the previous state government was accused of not following the Centre’s rules. The name of the scheme was even changed to “Bangla Awas Yojana” at one point, which created more problems.
Now, with the formation of a new BJP-led government in the state after the 2026 Assembly elections, things are changing fast. The central government has made it clear that the scheme will be revived without any delay. Both the rural housing mission (PMAY-G) and other central welfare schemes are expected to be rolled out at full speed. This political breakthrough means the path is being cleared for the release of thousands of crores in housing assistance that was blocked for years.

Criteria

You must be an Indian citizen living in West Bengal.

You or any member of your family must not own a “pucca” house anywhere in India.

Your family’s total yearly income must fall within the limits set by the scheme.

For the rural scheme, preference is given to families currently living in a “kutcha” house or those who are completely homeless.

Special priority is given to women applicants, widows, Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST), and disabled persons.

Annual Income Limits (Urban Scheme – PMAY-U)
EWS (Economically Weaker Section): Families earning up to ₹3 lakh per year.

MIG (Middle Income Group): Families earning between ₹6 lakh and ₹18 lakh per year.
PM Awas Yojana Benefits

For PMAY-G (Rural):

₹1,20,000: This is the standard assistance given per house in plain areas of West Bengal.

For PMAY-U (Urban):
