The year 2026 brings a major change for women in West Bengal. From June 1, 2026, women can ride state-run buses for free. This is one of the first big steps taken by the new government under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. It aims to ease the daily travel burden of common women and students.
WB Free Bus Travel For Woman and StudentsÂ
During the West Bengal assembly elections, the BJP promised that if it came to power, it would give free bus travel to women. On May 11, 2026, in the very first cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister ordered officials to roll out the scheme from June.
The announcement came just two days after the new government took oath. This shows that the ruling party means business and wants to keep its word without delay. For over 15 years, the previous government had run the state. This is the first time a BJP government is at the helm in West Bengal.
What Is the Free Bus Travel Scheme?
Simply put, any woman in West Bengal can board a state-run bus and travel without spending a rupee. There is no need for a ticket. This covers all buses that fall under the West Bengal State Transport Corporation and other government wings.
The scheme is not just for a few cities. It applies across the whole state. Whether you are in Kolkata, a small town, or a village connected by a state bus, you can benefit. The scheme starts on June 1, 2026, and will run along with other big ticket welfare measures.
Who Can Avail of the Benefit?
The free bus ride is for every woman in West Bengal. It is not restricted by age or income limit.Â
Gender:Â Women (including girls).
Age: Any age – young students, working women, and elderly ladies.
Residency:Â Must be a resident of West Bengal (though the exact ID proof requirements are still being finalized).
Bus Type:Â Only government-run buses. Private buses and mini-buses may not be covered in the first phase.
WB Free Bus Travel Benefits
The programme is simple and has a few standout points:
Zero Cost:Â No ticket is needed. Women can save hundreds of rupees every month that they normally spend on bus fare.
Daily Savings:Â A woman spending Rs. 20 per day on a to-and-fro bus ride can save around Rs. 600 per month, or over Rs. 7,000 a year.
No Cap on Travel:Â As per current information, there is no daily limit on trips. Women can travel as many times as needed.
Statewide Coverage:Â The rule applies everywhere in West Bengal where state buses operate.

Other Welfare Measures Starting June 1
The free bus scheme is part of a larger package that the new government is rolling out. Other measures include:
Ayushman Bharat Yojana: Health insurance for lakhs of families. This Central scheme was blocked by the previous government. Now it will cover Bengal’s residents.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao:Â Renewed push for girl child education.
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana 3.0:Â Subsidised cooking gas connections for poor households.
PM Fasal Bima Yojana:Â Crop insurance for farmers.
Vishwakarma Yojana:Â Support for artisans and craftspeople.
All these aim to push Bengal into the mainstream of national welfare schemes that the state missed for many years.
No Existing Schemes Will Stop
The Chief Minister has made it clear that no ongoing social welfare scheme will be discontinued. This includes old-age pensions, widow pensions, and other state-level programmes. The free bus travel is an extra benefit, not a replacement.
