The Ayushman Bharat card is part of a big Central government health scheme called Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). It is a free health insurance cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family every year. You can use it in both government and listed private hospitals across India, and the treatment is completely cashless.
For many years, the people of West Bengal could not apply for this scheme because the previous state government had stopped it. Instead, the state ran a different health card called ‘Swasthya Sathi’. After the 2026 assembly election results, which saw a BJP government come to power in the state, the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat scheme has been fully opened for West Bengal residents.
